Welcome to Virtual Brush Lettering!
We love writing with brushes, and are so excited to now offer this course in addition to our flagship calligraphy class! Our students love the variety and it’s a great way to get repeat customers from previous calligraphy classes.[/vc_column_text][vc_separator type=”transparent” up=”20″ down=”20″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row css_animation=”” row_type=”row” use_row_as_full_screen_section=”no” type=”full_width” angled_section=”no” text_align=”left” background_image_as_pattern=”without_pattern”][vc_column][qode_accordion][qode_accordion_tab title=”*Holiday 2020*” el_id=”Holiday 2020″][vc_column_text]
We’re excited to offer new themed virtual classes for the 2020 holidays. The five themes we decided on are:
- Pumpkin lettering
- Tablescape class
- Envelope writing/holiday card class
- Ornament writing class
- NYE cup lettering (wine glass, champagne flute, bottle, plastic cup) + a fun NYE resolutions download
If you have other ideas that you’d like to offer, send us an email explaining what you’re looking to teach! A few others have mentioned they want to do a flourishing class, so let us know what you’re thinking and we’re happy to figure out the logistics of it with you! For our themed classes, we teach the same way we’ve been teaching our virtual classes – with the brush lettering lesson at the beginning of class, and then the end 15 or so min spent on the final activity (pumpkin lettering, ornaments…etc).

- Review the scheduling time sheet via google sheets and insert your name on any days and times you know for sure you’d like to teach. Sign yourself up for 1 class per month (to start, for now!) and if we can add more we will.
- The schedule sheet is all based on Eastern Standard Time. Your ticket link will reflect your timezone, but for scheduling purposes please keep in mind when planning on the sheet. Example: if our west coast instructors want to teach at 7pm Pacific time, you’d enter your name on the 10pm time slot.
- List your event via the portal, noting the new ticket description and titles.
- Using your Zoom Account, set up a Zoom meeting and send that link to virtualclasses@sipandscript.com. We are having you set up the “meetings” so that you show up as the host and can let your students “in”.
- Share away once you receive your live ticket link from us!
- Schedule your video/equipment test run with your buddy to do a dry run and make sure you feel confident with the set up and get feedback! Make sure you can both hear one another clearly!
[/vc_column_text][/qode_accordion_tab][qode_accordion_tab title=”Set Up”][vc_column_text]
- Log into your Zoom link via your desktop/laptop and then again from your phone in the desk tripod approximately 10 minutes before class starts so you can get everything ready for when guests start to join in. Recommend doing this in a CHROME browser on your computers.
- You will need to click approve for each guest logging in.
- You will need to MUTE your phone camera in the Zoom call, but also turn the volume all the way down on the phone itself to avoid a screeching noise.
- You will also need to physically turn your phone until it switches to landscape mode on the screen before or after (whatever works easiest for you) putting it in the tripod.
- The students will be instructed to pin you to their screen for the duration of class. See modified class script for instructions on directing them to go back and forth between your face screen and your pen screen.
- Students will also be encouraged to ask questions throughout your demo via the chatbox that you can address when finishing whatever segment you are on.
- Angle your computer in a way that your overheard tripod does not cut across your face.
- Depending on time of day and lighting in your office, trial the ring light facing you, or the ring light set up over your tripod (if you can angle your computer in a way that this doesn’t block your face view). If you have a desk light that works well and you don’t want the ring light in the way of your overhead tripod, definitely use it face on! It looks professional, and also personally makes us look like we haven’t been stuck inside for 2 months straight – ha!

Making the switch from in-person classes to virtual classes may seem like a quick switch, but there are a lot of differences to keep in mind! One of the biggest differences is the timing of class. Normally in our classes we do our introduction, followed by basic strokes and lots of walking around and chatting with guests (especially in the beginning of class when they’re just starting to dip their pens!). This will be totally different since everyone will be behind a screen.
Print out your class list, so you know who you are expecting and “check in” students as they arrive. In zoom, as the host, you’ll be able to admit entry into the session. The students will be receiving instructions to be on time, but we recommend that you’re set up a few minutes early to let the students in as they come. Feel free to play music during this time, and wait just 2-3 minutes for all the guests to arrive before you start.
For the general timeline of the class, please keep this schedule in mind. You might spend longer than 5 minutes in one section, and less in others but just as a general guideline you can reference this flow:
5 min- Welcome them, and give instructions of class flow. Do your normal class introduction here, talk about your background story, your business, and how you got started with calligraphy. Explain that you’ll be picking a raffle winner to anyone who posts during class on social media. Do a virtual cheers to them all before diving into the instruction!
5 min- instruct students to pin your overhead camera screen to their view. Go over the materials they have and explain how to achieve the pressure with a brush/brush marker. The brush marker students receive has a monoline side, as well as a brush side. Instruct them to use the brush side for the class, but it’s fun to experiement with the monoline side as well for faux-calligraphy lettering!
5 min– ink education: explain gouache and how to make the ink! They will have an instruction card for basic set up, but this is where you will want to explain how to get the right consistency. Gouache based ink is great because you can get any color combination you could think of by mixing colors. You’ll want to explain how mixing gouache is simple, however it is a slow process to make sure you have the right consistency. We’re looking for a whole-milk consistency, if it’s too light, they will have more of a watercolor look, if it’s too thick, they will have a more opaque, paint stroke look. We recommend having a small glass of water that they can use with their pipette and add drops of water one by one.
5 mins– basic strokes: explain what they are, why we start with them (say you don’t want them to even think about letters yet!) and encourage them to really practice getting the hang of the thick and thin sides with both the brush marker and the paint brush.
5 mins: allow time for them to do basic strokes on the basic strokes page and answer any questions coming up. Feel free to play some music during this so it’s not super quiet while they concentrate.
10 minutes: move them to the alphabet guide. Demonstrate a few letters here to show them your brush or marker moving and starting/stopping and picking up brush or marker (explain how it’s not like cursive so they don’t have to hold their pen down on the paper the entire time). Have them practice the alphabet on the guides, or separately on the watercolor paper, and meanwhile you can answer more questions coming up. Feel free to play music during this time as well.
10-15 min- Connecting Letters: Once they have practiced their alphabet, have them tune into your overhead screen again and demonstrate connecting the upstrokes to form words. Write a few words out so they get the idea, and encourage them to try with either word guide sheet, or independently freehanding. Tell them you’re happy to write out any requests they’d like to see!
5-10 min- Q&A, pick a raffle winner, closing statements and thank you! Encourage them to tag their work as they practice, and make sure they know where to find/follow you on IG. Remind them they’ll be getting a follow up email after class on additional resources.
Tips for running online classes:
- Explain the way class will flow so people know what to be working on.
- Explain the use of the chat box, and how guests can ask questions throughout class, as well as questions to be answered at the end of class.
- Recommend “pinning” the desk view camera to student’s screens during working time so they can follow along with what you are writing.
- Have a few of your favorite supplies on hand, or additional ink colors since they’ll likely ask. One of the advantages to this FAQ now is that you’ll be able to show them some favs in your stash!
- If it seems really quiet as people are working, feel free to play music in the background! Just make sure it’s not too loud for guests!
[/vc_column_text][/qode_accordion_tab][qode_accordion_tab title=”Aesthetics”][vc_column_text]Regarding your set-up for classes, please be mindful of the general aesthetics of your space. Viewers will get a glimpse into your home/office so a few things to keep a mental note of:
- Think about your table top view and feel free to lay out some pretty and fun paper, envelope or work samples, pretty cocktail napkins and cocktail glass, etc! Get creative and think about what we usually have out in class and in our instagram videos!
- On that same note, on your head on view think about your background and try to set up an area in your house without too many distractions/family members actively in the background! Even if it’s a quiet spot that you don’t typically “do work” from.
- Any props/decor you have in your stash from classes like the fun pampas grass centerpieces you had or grocery store flowers you get def put out like usual where you can! Cozy candles too!
- Remember that it’s likely and encouraged that your students will be snapping pics/videos during your instruction to post to socials.
- Nail polish WELCOME here!!! For those close up writing shots!
- Attire: dress as you would teaching normally, our sip & script swag of course is fine! Very into chic loungewear sets these days too! If you want to use this as a reason to get dressed up for the first time in forever, by all means go for it.

Please read through the script below to get a feel for how the class will run. This is our typical script for in-person brush lettering classes, however, we’ve adjusted it to make necessary changes for virtual classes.
[/vc_column_text][qode_accordion style=”toggle”][qode_accordion_tab title=”Intro Script” el_id=”raffle”][vc_column_text]
“Hi Everyone, thank you for coming tonight! I’m NAME from YOUR COMPANY NAME and I started getting into lettering [explain your background]. We are so excited to now introduce Brush Lettering in our course offerings! If you’ve taken a calligraphy course before, we hope you enjoy this different way to form beautiful letters, and if you’ve never dabbled in calligraphy or lettering before, that’s totally fine!
I’m going to get you started by explaining what’s in front of you. First I’d like to explain the difference between calligraphy and hand lettering. There are similarities to each, such as the pretty thick and thin side variations to each letter and the modern, playful feel to the looks, but both can be mistaken for the same thing. Calligraphy is achieved with the use of a pen that you dip into an inkwell, with a flexible metal tip (nib) so that you can achieve both the thick and thin sides to the letters. Hand Lettering is defined by the art of DRAWING letters. In class, we will be using both markers and paint brushes to achieve that classic “calligraphy” look.
Second, everything that is in front of you is all that you need to get started! We have our two writing utensils, a brush marker and a paint brush. The brush marker is a dual-sided pen. For class today, we will be working with the larger side/brush side, but so you know, the other end is a monoline tip. This will give you an even line when writing and works well for doing faux calligraphy. The brush tip is flexible, so when you apply pressure, it will slightly bend, giving you a thicker line. When you apply light pressure, it will give you a thinner stroke. Similarly to the paint brush, the more pressure you apply, it will give you the thicker stroke, and when you lift your brush up, the thinner line will appear.
We also have an ink pot that is prefilled with gouache. Gouache is a watercolor based paint and makes for perfect calligraphy ink! Gouache comes in so many colors, and you can mix colors to make any color you want! For class today, we are keeping it simple so you can learn how to properly make ink, but we do recommend testing out more colors after this class! Along with the ink, you also have a pipette which is a little dropper that helps to evenly add water into your paint mixture. Lastly, you have all of your guides, a few pieces of tracing paper, and watercolor paper. We will be working through these throughout class, so feel free to ask any questions along the way!
To start, we are going to first mix our gouache so we make our ink for our paintbrush! You’ll be able to use both the brush marker as well as paintbrush and ink to write throughout class. When it comes to making gouache ink, you want to go slowly so you can get the right consistency. Making gouache involves a couple of things, water, gouache and a lot of mixing. Some people like to add gum arabic (a binding agent) to their mixture as well, but this is optional. You’re going to slowly add in a few drops of clean water to your ink pot and then mix. Ultimately you’ll want to do this until you get a creamy, whole-milk consistency. If you add too little water, it will be thick when you go to do your strokes. If you add too much water, you’ll have a more watercolor-looking stroke.
Once you’ve mixed your ink, I’ll get us started with our warm up of basic strokes.”

We like to start off with the markers because they’re a more natural writing utensil.
“I keep mentioning the thick and thin side of every letter, so I want to show you how to achieve that beautiful look with the use of your brush pen. In order to achieve the thick/thin line in your strokes, you are going to be controlling the size of the lines you draw by adjusting the amount of pressure you put on the brush tip. Every single time you put heavy pressue on that tip, you’ll get a thick line, and every single time you lightly drag the tip, you’ll get the thin line. The rule to this is, every time your hand moves UP the page it’s going to be a thin line and every time your hand moves DOWN the page is when you want to apply that pressure for the thick line. Thin up, thick down.
I want you to try the pressure points with the warm up on “the pregame” page of your guide, followed by the “wave” and other shapes modelled there. Once you do a few lines of each, you can then move on to the freehand section. You add a piece of tracing paper on top of your guide so you can write on top of it, and use it again for future practice.”

Have them warm up on the “happy hour” page of their guide, using tracing paper on top and tracing each letter, or writing underneath each row of letters. We will then have them move onto the tracing paper to practice letter by letter, down the pages in rows. They can use the line guide to keep their lines and letters straight. They can also refer to the full-sized alphabet for practice here.[/vc_column_text][/qode_accordion_tab][qode_accordion_tab title=”The Party Script” el_id=”post-class”][vc_column_text]
“I’m now going to have you pause here with your markers and return the caps to the top so they don’t dry out! I want to chat about your paintbrushes, gouache ink and your watercolor paper for this next portion of class.
In this class we are using a size 20 brush, which is our favorite for lettering projects like envelopes and place cards because you can get fine lines and smaller letters with it. Beyond class today, we encourage you to try a bunch of different sized brushes to really find which style suits you best. You’ll get a follow up email after class on different brushes we use and love! Any larger size brush you may try would be good for any large scale paper projects. The one you’ll use today for writing letters using the same principles of the basic strokes as you did with the markers.
The goal here is to get the consistency to be an “ombre” type look, with heavy saturation to begin with that gradually fades into more translucent, a pattern you’ll carry throughout your words each time you dip your brush into your paint mixture. I recommend to start over again with basic strokes, and move onto letter practice once you’re comfortable with the paint consistency. You’ll be writing on watercolor paper now, and can use the alphabet guides as a visual as you are writing.”

“For the last portion of the class, we’re going to work on connecting letters. With your brush marker or paintbrush and ink, we’re going to work on the word sheet you have in front of you. When it comes to connecting letters, you want to think about the baseline of the word, and the style of how you want to write. There’s a straight baseline, where all of the letters fall at the same hight, as well as a more whimsical, bouncy style of lettering. In either case, you’re going to want to start by writing each letter and bringing the tail end of the letter up to meet the next letter that follows. When you feel comfortable with this, feel free to take it to the watercolor paper and practice on your own. If you’d like me to write anything for you, let me know and I can!”
Closing raffle and wrap up statements 10 or so minutes left of class. Make sure they clean their brushes, cap their markers and seal their ink jars. We will send follow up email as well.[/vc_column_text][/qode_accordion_tab][/qode_accordion][/vc_column][/vc_row]
