We’re excited to offer new themed virtual classes for the 2020 holidays. The five themes we decided on are:

  1. Pumpkin lettering
  2. Tablescape class
  3. Envelope writing/holiday card class
  4. Ornament writing class
  5. NYE cup lettering (wine glass, champagne flute, bottle, plastic cup) + a fun NYE resolutions download

If you have other ideas that you’d like to offer, send us an email explaining what you’re looking to teach! A few others have mentioned they want to do a flourishing class, so let us know what you’re thinking and we’re happy to figure out the logistics of it with you! For our themed classes, we teach the same way we’ve been teaching our virtual classes – with the modern calligraphy lesson at the beginning of class, and then the end 15 or so min spent on the final activity (pumpkin lettering, ornaments…etc).

  1. Review the scheduling time sheet  via google sheets and insert your name on any days and times you know for sure you’d like to teach. Sign yourself up for 2 classes per week (to start, for now!) and if we can add more we will.
  2. The schedule sheet is all based on Eastern Standard Time. Your ticket link will reflect your timezone, but for scheduling purposes please keep in mind when planning on the sheet. Example: if our west coast instructors want to teach at 7pm Pacific time, you’d enter your name on the 10pm time slot.
  3. List your event via the portal, noting the new ticket description and titles.
  4. In your google calendar, set up your class with the video conferencing google hangout option selected. Send that google link to virtualclasses@sipandscript.com. We are having you set up the “meetings” so that you show up as the host and can let your students “in”.
  5. Share away once you receive your live ticket link from us!
  6. Schedule your video/equipment test run with your buddy to do a dry run and make sure you feel confident with the set up and get feedback! Make sure you can both hear one another clearly!

[/vc_column_text][/qode_accordion_tab][qode_accordion_tab title=”Set Up” el_id=”Set Up”][vc_column_text]

  • Log into your google link via your desktop/laptop and then again from your phone in the desk tripod approximately 10 minutes before class starts so you can get everything ready for when guests start to join in. Recommend doing this in a CHROME browser on your computers.
  • You will need to click approve for each guest logging in.
  • You will need to MUTE your phone camera in the google call, but also turn the volume all the way down on the phone itself to avoid a screeching noise.
  • You will also need to physically turn your phone until it switches to landscape mode on the screen before or after (whatever works easiest for you) putting it in the tripod.
  • The students will be instructed to pin you to their screen for the duration of class. See modified class script for instructions on directing them to go back and forth between your face screen and your pen screen.
  • Students will also be encouraged to ask questions throughout your demo via the chat box that you can address when finishing whatever segment you are on.
  • Angle your computer in a way that your overheard tripod does not cut across your face.
  • Depending on time of day and lighting in your office, trial the ring light facing you, or the ring light set up over your tripod (if you can angle your computer in a way that this doesn’t block your face view). If you have a desk light that works well and you don’t want the ring light in the way of your overhead tripod, definitely use it face on! It looks professional, and also personally makes us look like we haven’t been stuck inside for 6 weeks straight – ha!

One of the biggest differences is the timing of class. Normally in our classes we do our introduction, followed by basic strokes and lots of walking around and chatting with guests (especially in the beginning of class when they’re just starting to dip their pens!). This will be totally different since everyone will be behind a screen.

Print out your class list, so you know who you are expecting and “check in” students as they arrive. In google, as the host, you’ll be able to admit entry into the session. The students will be receiving instructions to be on time, but we recommend that you’re set up a few minutes early to let the students in as they come. Feel free to play music during this time, and wait just 2-3 minutes for all the guests to arrive before you start.

For the general timeline of the class, please keep this schedule in mind. You might spend longer than 5 minutes in one section, and less in others but just as a general guideline you can reference this flow:

5 min- Welcome them, and give instructions of class flow. Do your normal class introduction here, talk about your background story, your business, and how you got started with calligraphy. Explain that you’ll be picking a raffle winner to anyone who posts during class on social media. Do a virtual cheers to them all before diving into the instruction!

5 min- instruct students to pin your overhead camera screen to their view. Go over nib anatomy, nib care, setting up your pen and the angles of how to hold, nib pressure example without ink.

5 min– ink education: explain sumi ink and how the japanese drawing ink is great for beginners and how it will feel/look depending on the kind of paper you use. Explain the tracing paper is great for starting out but later on they’d want to try heavier paper and cardstock.  Demonstrate how to dip your pen into it, where to stop on the nib, and how sometimes it’s easier to tilt your inkwell for this and brush off the nib from the edges. Demonstrate basic ink flow to then lead into basic strokes. Demonstrate having a sheet of scrap paper to use on the side, to do one downstroke on before starting their writing so they won’t get big blobs of ink in the middle of their letters and words.

5 mins– basic strokes: explain what they are, why we start with them (say you don’t want them to even think about letters yet!) and encourage them to really practice getting the hang of the thick and thin sides.

5 mins: allow time for them to do basic strokes and answer any questions coming up. Feel free to play some music during this so it’s not super quiet while they concentrate.

10 minutes: move them to the alphabet guide and show them to set it up under their tracing paper packs. Demonstrate a few letters here to show them your pen moving and starting/stopping (explain how it’s not like cursive so they don’t have to hold their pen down on the paper the entire time). Have them practice the alphabet, and meanwhile you can answer more questions coming up. Feel free to play music during this time as well.

10-15 min- Connecting Letters: Once they have practiced their alphabet, have them tune into your overhead screen again and demonstrate connecting the upstrokes to form words. Write a few words out so they get the idea, and encourage them to try with either word guide sheets they have downloaded or independently freehanding. Tell them you’re happy to write out any requests they’d like to see!

5-10 min- Q&A, pick a raffle winner, closing statements and thank you! Encourage them to tag their work as they practice, and make sure they know where to find/follow you on IG. Remind them they’ll be getting a follow up email after class on additional resources.

Tips for running online classes:

  1. Explain the way class will flow so people know what to be working on.
  2. Explain the use of the chat box, and how guests can ask questions throughout class, as well as questions to be answered at the end of class.
  3. Recommend “pinning” the desk view camera to student’s screens during working time so they can follow along with what you are writing.
  4. Have a few of your favorite supplies on hand, or additional ink colors since they’ll likely ask. One of the advantages to this FAQ now is that you’ll be able to show them some favs in your stash!
  5. If it seems really quiet as people are working, feel free to play music in the background! Just make sure it’s not too loud for guests!

[/vc_column_text][/qode_accordion_tab][qode_accordion_tab title=”Aesthetics” el_id=”Aesthetics”][vc_column_text]Regarding your set-up for classes, please be mindful of the general aesthetics of your space. Viewers will get a glimpse into your home/office so a few things to keep a mental note of:

  1. Think about your table top view and feel free to lay out some pretty and fun paper, envelope or work samples, pretty cocktail napkins and cocktail glass, etc! Get creative and think about what we usually have out in class and in our instagram videos!
  2. On that same note, on your head on view think about your background and try to set up an area in your house without too many distractions/family members actively in the background! Even if it’s a quiet spot that you don’t typically “do work” from.
  3. Any props/decor you have in your stash from classes like the fun pampas grass centerpieces you had or grocery store flowers you get def put out like usual where you can! Cozy candles too!
  4. Remember that it’s likely and encouraged that your students will be snapping pics/videos during your instruction to post to socials.
  5. Nail polish WELCOME here!!! For those close up writing shots!
  6. Attire: dress as you would teaching normally, our sip & script swag of course is fine! Very into chic loungewear sets these days too! If you want to use this as a reason to get dressed up for the first time in forever, by all means go for it.
